Why Simpsons Why?!?

No matter how low The Simpsons has fallen, why did it ever have to fall to the Family Guy level?  This 1 hour episode was so bad that even the creators knew to make fun of it...a lot during the airing.  There's not one person that can honestly answer why the episode went a full hour beyond sponsors paid for 1 hour, and the checks had already been cashed.  What are your thoughts?
