If you were planning on camping at Maquoketa Caves this summer, you'll have to look elsewhere.

The Des Moines Register is reporting that the state park will be closed through August due to electrical upgrades and road construction. The campgrounds will also be closed between April and the end of August.

This is unfortunate news both for outdoor enthusiasts and the tourism industry. The article states that between 250,000-300,000 people visit Maquoketa Caves each year.

Luckily, there are plenty of other beautiful places to hike in the area, including Blackhawk State Park, Scott County Park, and Loud Thunder Forest Preserve.

Still, it's a bummer that the natural beauty of the caves can't be enjoyed until fall. I know a lot of people who love camping at the park every summer, so it's a true disappointment. Counting the days until Maquoketa Caves reopens.
