Every Halloween, this natural mama dreads the amount of processed candy my children receive as a result of Halloween celebrations at various places, schools, friends' homes and at "trunk or treats". Between all the places we go and everyone celebrating everywhere, we have enough candy in the house for years and years! I don't like consuming such extreme amounts of sugar and generally think it's not healthy for our bodies or our children's bodies. So, what's the answer??

Become the "Switch Witch!"

I have had to get creative over the years to not only convince my kiddos they don't need SO much candy but to think of ways to get them to agree to consume less. Think about toys they want, activities they like doing or purchasing little items they would give up candy for. I also like to buy the organic versions of "treats" that they prefer or switch them for their favorite fruits. You can make little coupons for "date nights", give incentive notes for larger gifts (cuz you know, Christmas is just around the corner), give money or allow an activity or fun night they've been interested in. Get as creative as you want!

I feel the lesson is to empower them and help them understand too much indulgence can be harmful. I also don't want to 'take away' or "fight" them for the candy. That just takes the fun right out of a celebration. Trust me!

While Halloween can be fun and healthy, don't forget to treat yourself for all the effort. The Switch Witch can also be paid for her services in chocolate, which the kiddos are usually happy to share.  ;)
