One of the neatest things I remember from when I first arrived in the Quad Cities almost 20 years ago was the real Christmas tree that would adorn the top of the old KONE tower by the I-74 bridge.

Sometimes, I'd become so enamored with it while driving that I'd come close to kissing the guardrail on the bridge.

When the new KONE building was built to the west in downtown Moline, a less attractive, artificial tree was plunked on top. One year it lost a battle with strong December winds and a section plummeted to the plaza below.

The old KONE tower looked doomed to the wrecking ball once construction began on the new I-74 bridge, but it looks like the majestic overlook will live on.

Here's hoping they place a fresh, fully lit Christmas tree on top come December.
