Hundreds of dogs in the Chicago area have gotten sick from a very contagious strain of canine flu within the past year. And experts say they expect the dog flu to make its way to Iowa.

Researchers at Iowa State University warn that pet owners may not even realize their dog is sick until other dogs get infected. Dr. Bryce Kibble of the ISU School of Veterinary Medicine tells KCCI-TV in Des Moines that vaccines are being developed but aren't yet available. Dr. Kibble says the best way to protect your pup is to limit time spent with other dogs at places like groomers or dog parks.

Just something to think about when out with your pooch during the warmer weather.
