University of Iowa officials say one person is dead following an explosion and fire at a university-owned apartment at about 4:30 Friday afternoon.

According to KCRG, emergency crews responded to the 600 block of Hawkeye Drive after neighbors reported hearing the explosion. One window had appeared to have been blown out, with debris in the surrounding area outside of the building.

The apartment complex is directly south of the UI tennis center and about three miles west of the main campus.

Most residents at the complex were allowed to return to their apartments. Those near the apartment affected will likely be able to return to their homes later this evening.

Authorities are not releasing the name of the victim at this time.
