Money is great but money that makes money is even better.

If you have a few ones smushed in your purse or wallet, you may want to get them out and examine them. NBC Chicago reports that some currency collectors are willing to pay upwards of $150,000 for select $1 bills that have a printing error.

Wealthy Nickel says that these misprinted $1 bills were made in two batches: the first one in 2014 and the second one in 2016. There are about 6 million of them in circulation.

The misprint is their serial numbers. The same order for money was placed twice in 2014 & 2016 and dollars were printed with the same serial numbers, counterfeiting their currency. The U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing didn't catch this snafu so now currency collectors are scrambling to get the dollars...and paying major moolah to do it.

Silverpicker explained it on YouTube, but basically here are the 3 main points to look for on your dollar bills:

  • The Series date near Washington's picture must say "Series 2013"
  • The bill must have a 'B' Federal Reserve Seal above the serial number
  • The number must end with a star and be between B00000001* – B00250000* or B03200001*-B09600000*

If you want to see if your serial number matches another, you can plug it into the Project 2013B database to check.

There are a lot of matches to be found. 6.4 million of these dollar bills were printed and to date, only 9 pairs have been found. It's definitely worth digging through your dollars for.
