One Direction Announces Permanent Split

1D announced an "extended" hiatus in late 2015. It's now been confirmed that Harry, Liam, Louis, and Niall will be going their separate directions.

The group's future has been in doubt ever since Zayn Malik departed 1D in March of 2015. A source close to the group tells Us Weekly that the four members decided “not to renew their recording contract” after their tour came to an end in October. “The 1D thing just ran its course. They’ll remain friends, but they are exhausted and want solo careers.”

Harry Styles has been hinting at going solo for quite some time, and Jay-Z has already shown interest in managing his career.

**UPDATE** A different source "close to the band" tells Billboard that 1D's hiatus is just that and "nothing has changed...for the group, and all will be revealed in due time from the band members' own mouths."

Not sure how TWO sources close to the band have TWO different stories, but...oh, well. Stay tuned.
