If your smoke detector is more than five years old or you don't have a smoke detector where you live, the American Red Cross of the Quad-Cities and Western Illinois will be joining other chapters across the nation to get free smoke alarms installed in your home.

The Home Fire Campaign helps save lives by installing free smoke alarms in homes that don't have them, and by educating people about home fire safety.

It is the goal of the Red Cross’ “Sound the Alarm, Save a Life,”  home fire campaign to reduce deaths caused by fires by 25 percent according to a Quad-City Times article. The goal is 700 new smoke alarms in Quad-City region homes which will be installed for people in need, and a volunteer will help families plan escape routes.

The Red Cross advises everyone to check their smoke alarms and not just the batteries, but the condition of the detectors. If your smoke alarm is over five years old it should be replaced. To request a new device contact the American Red Cross of the Quad-Cities and Western Illinois office or online.
