As I reported three weeks ago, a bill allowing Iowa police to pull folks over for texting while driving has now made its way through the Iowa legislature, and is awaiting the governor's signature.

As it stands now, police in Iowa cannot pull over a driver for texting. There has to be another reason for the stop, like a burnt out taillight, or speeding.

Unfortunately, even if the governor signs the bill, Iowa will remain behind in penalizing people for distracted driving. The law won't cover making phone calls, or using your phone as a GPS while driving.

Do you think the governor should sign the bill?  Should penalties for distracted driving be heavier? Sound off in the comments.
