It's back to school time and that means no sales tax will be charged on clothing and footwear this weekend in the Iowa Quad Cities.

It is estimated national average household spends $501 on school supplies which has increased slightly from last year.

The two-day tax holiday applies to most apparel priced less than $100 but many school essentials like backpacks and pencils are not tax-exempt. According to the Iowa Department of Revenue, articles of clothing "intended to be work on or about the human body" is included in the discount. Items not included: socks, underwear, bras, baby clothes, swim suits, watches, sporting equipment and an special clothing or footwear "designed primarily for athletic activity or protective use and not usually considered appropriate for everyday wear."

The discount will automatically apply as you check-out; no coupons or special promo codes are needed.  The state sales tax rate in Iowa is 6 percent. Tax free weekend in Iowa is Aug. 4-5.
