These Quad Cities Bridges Aren’t Very Safe

Cent-bridge

It’s been ten years since the collapse of an Interstate bridge in Minneapolis, and still 21% of bridges in Iowa are classified as “structurally deficient” according to the American Road and Transportation Builders Association. That makes Iowa #1 in the nation for deficient bridges.

Structurally deficient means one or more of the key bridge elements, like the deck, superstructure or support structures, are considered to be in “poor” or worse condition.

The Centennial Bridge between Davenport and Rock Island was listed as the most travelled structurally deficient bridge in the state. The north Division Street bridge over Duck Creek also made the list.

Another 4% of Iowa bridges are classified as “functionally obsolete,” including the I-74 bridge, which is finally being replaced after nearly two decades of studies and funding starts and stops.

In Illinois, 8% of bridges are classified as structurally deficient, ranking the Land of Lincoln 6th in the nation.

It seems like investing in rebuilding our infrastructure could be a boost for the economy, while avoiding another tragedy like Minneapolis.
