Alexis Bledel Addresses Rory’s Unexpected Fate on ‘Gilmore Girls': ‘It Was Hard For Me to Digest’
It's been nearly five months since Netflix aired Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, but people—particularly cast members—still can't stop talking about that shocking cliffhanger ending.
Appearing at a panel for Deadline's Emmy Contenders on Sunday, April 9, Alexis Bledel, who played Rory Gilmore on the hit series and its Netflix revival, admitted that her character's fate—SPOILER: Rory reveals that she's pregnant in the final few moments of A Year in the Life—"certainly wasn't the ending [she] expected."
"I had told [show creator] Amy [Sherman-Palladino] that I hoped Rory would end on a high note after all of her hard work," Bledel admitted. "I wanted to see her succeed and be thriving. So it was a hard thing for me to digest."
Despite her disappointment, the actress added that the ending was, at the very least, aligned with Sherman-Palladino's vision overarching vision for the series.
"She knew what reaction she was going to get out of the audience," Bledel said. "She delighted by throwing everyone a curve ball. I knew that's what she wanted and I trusted her."
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter back in December, Sherman-Palladino defended her decision to end the series with a surprise pregnancy.
"[Rory and Lorelai are] very tied and to me, that history repeating itself and daughter following in mother’s footsteps, where you lead, I will follow—we took the [theme] song very seriously," she explained.
"When we picked those words and we went down that path, it just felt right then and it actually feels even more right now especially because Rory is older. She’s the same age Lorelai was when the show started. It really does feel a little Lion King-y, the whole circle of life," the showrunner added.
