Most of us struggle in some way or another in regards to our health.  It's so easy to grab a quick burger when you're running late and won't be able to eat for another 5 hours. It's hard to get out and go for a run when the path isn't well lit.  We can make all sorts of excuses why we should push our bike ride until tomorrow.  Or better yet...until Monday.

It's all about making it easier.  If you have no stumbling blocks in front of you (or perceived stumbling blocks) it's going to be easier to run, to bike, to move in general.

Bettendorf city staff, schools and other partners are taking part in the Healthy Hometown Initiative by Wellmark.  They are helping Iowa become healthier by promoting moving more and eating healthier for residents. They'll be taking a look at how to make walking and biking safer and promote healthy food options in schools in vending machines and concession stands.

Wellmark and the Healthiest State Initiative are working to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation and enhance the well-being of Iowa residents. Whether it’s planting community gardens, making your town more walkable, or volunteering, Healthy Hometown is here to help.

According to QConline: "Bettendorf's plan is to create a more pedestrian friendly path by widening the sidewalks, moving the farmer's market to a more centrally located place, adding more healthy foods to school lunches, adding water stations especially along trails and in schools, adding community gardens and edible landscaping, installing bike racks, promoting walking or biking groups, and developing a nicotine-free park policy".

Bettendorf looks to continue making improvements especially now that the bridge is in operation.

Every generation goes through this, I assume. Looking back at a more simple time where responsibilities haven't set in and life seems fun. Opportunities are endless.

Let's go back to the 1990's to Wacky Waters, 50 Cent Beer night and revisit Mallards Mania!
