It's tax time.  Yeah, you pay taxes all year.  But now you have to look at the total amount that you've given the government.  And if you live in Illinois, your tax burden is one of the highest in the country.

Overall, the numbers paint a picture that uses a lot of blue for the states with the highest taxes.

We pay taxes on, well, pretty much everything.  If you are making or spending money you are being taxed on it.  In this study, WalletHub focused on three of the big ones.

Property Tax Burden:  Vermont takes the most here with a whopping 5% of residents' income.  Meanwhile, Alabama is the lowest at just 1.4%

Income Tax Burden:  New York is the leader in taking money from your hard-earned income.  They are taking 5.8% of residents' checks before they even see the check.  On the opposite end, Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming do not have any income tax.

Sales and Excise Tax Burden:  While they live in paradise, it's expensive.  Hawaii residents pay around 7.2% in sales and excise tax.  This makes sense with so many tourists coming to the state.  You can enjoy the beaches, but they are going to get every dollar from you.  New Hampshire doesn't have a general sales tax, and other excise taxes end up less than 1% of residents' income each year.

With a 10.22% total tax burden, Illinois is the 7th most taxed state in the U.S.A.

So, how are they getting your money?  3.81% of that is from property tax (ranked 8th in the country), income tax is 2.63% (ranked 24th), and sales/excise tax is 3.78% (ranked 18th).

While only the property tax is top 10, all of them add up to get the total tax you pay in Illinois in the top 10.

Iowa has a 9.23% tax burden, coming in at number 17 in the country, while Wisconsin is at 8.31%, ranked number 32.

If you are looking to avoid taxes as much as possible, you might want to check out Alaska.  Ranked 50th in the nation with a 4.93% total tax burden.
