Wow... what a terrible thing to think about. Yet it is at the top of many people's minds. Newsweek used maps made by a professor and historian named Alex Wellerstein to determine the impact of a Russian nuclear strike using their most powerful missile. So, if you're looking for nuke results from a different country... they would most likely look pretty similar.

Nuclear Impact On Chicago

Reading the death tally out loud made me realize just how many people there are in Chicago. While it might not look big on a map, it would be very deadly. The report went on to say

In any given 24-hour period, there are on average 7,616,006 people in the full blast range (all four circles) of the simulated detonation in Chicago. There would be an estimated 1,991,320 fatalities and 2,543,730 injuries.

About half the blast's total area would reach across Lake Michigan.

Other Possible Illinois Targets

In the 1990s a map of every state was created and shared looking at the threat level of every town, city, and area in a state. The site goes on to state,

At the bottom of this page is the 1990 FEMA nuclear target map for Illinois. It was just a conceptual map about the nuclear threat. Even an all-out nuclear war - did not by any means mean that every site would be hit. For some states VERY FEW and POSSIBLY / PROBABLY NONE of the sites will be hit but others may have some very significant targets. Because circumstances have changed since 1990 some of the targets in many of the maps should be removed and possibly there are others that should be added.

Obviously, this list has been updated since the 90s. For instance, this list has The Zion Nuclear Generating Station as a target, this location was closed in 1998.

Zion Nuclear Power Station was the third dual-reactor nuclear power plant in the Commonwealth Edison network and served Chicago and the northern quarter of Illinois. The plant was built in 1973, and the first unit started producing power in December 1973. The second unit came online in September 1974

You can learn more here. Targets on the list are as follows,

  • Alton, Illinois
  • Peoria, Illinois
  • Springfield, Illinois

Obviously Chicago is the top on this list. See the more detailed list and look at the targets here.

Again this is an extreme example, and we should not live in fear 24/7. Stay safe, but live your life!
