This Friday is the first day of summer. So the website Wallet Hub just released its annual list of the best and worst states to take a summer road trip.

They base it on 33 different metrics, like traffic, gas prices, number of attractions, quality of the roads, and the weather. And this year, North Carolina took down Wyoming to snag the top spot.

Three new states also made the top ten: Virginia in 4th, Oregon in 8th, and Wisconsin in 10th place. (Florida, Washington, and Colorado dropped out of the top ten.)

The top ten states to take a summer road trip in 2019 are:

  1. North Carolina
  2. Wyoming
  3. Minnesota
  4. Virginia
  5. Texas
  6. New York
  7. Louisiana
  8. Oregon
  9. Utah
  10. Wisconsin

Illinois and Iowa rounded out the top 20 with Illinois ranked at 17 and Iowa at 20.

Rhode Island finished dead last again. Because does driving through a state that's 37 miles wide even count as a "road trip"?

The ten worst road trip states this year are:

  1. Rhode Island
  2. Delaware
  3. Connecticut
  4. Hawaii
  5. Arkansas
  6. Indiana
  7. Kansas
  8. Mississippi
  9. Alabama
  10. Montana
