Anytime you go into the woods, or really anywhere in the out-of-doors in summer, you're warned to look out for 2 things: snakes and ticks.
And either right before you go inside or as soon as you get in, everyone checks their ankles, legs, and socks for ticks. If you find one, you get the tweezers and pull it off, trying not to pop it.
You may not have/be able to find the tweezers in some situations and there are some pretty unique ways to repel ticks, besides just tick repellent.
Experts (and some gardening social media groups, which are always reliable) have suggestions on ways to repel, kill, and get ticks off.
According to CBS, last year, the number of emergency room visits for tick bites were the highest they have been since 2019. So these little menaces are running the game.
That's the thing with ticks: there are a lot of tick-borne illnesses that can happen. That includes Lyme disease, babesiosis (from deer ticks), and Powassan virus disease.
But why are they so bad lately? Dr. Dennis Bente, a professor of microbiology and immunology at University of Texas Medical Center, told CBS climate change contributes to it. He said at the time:
We are also seeing a longer tick season across the country, which historically has been a relatively predictable seasonal threat," Bente said. "While tick bites are more common in the summer because of increased outdoor activity, evidence shows that people must stay vigilant year-round now that ticks are also active in the winter because of warming driven by climate change.
Meanwhile, Scott County, Iowa has released their general reminders on how to deal with ticks this summer. But there are also some weird steps that are rumored to work.
