Chicago White Sox Fan’s Chirp Brings Arizona Baseman To Tears
A reminder: you can actually go too far with chirps.
In nearly any sport, hockey, baseball, whatever, fans yell out insults at the opposing team's players. Most of the time, they're lighthearted insults and some of them can actually be hilarious.
But then there's this situation.
According to TODAY, when the Chicago White Sox were hosting the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 24th, a White Sox fan yelled something so terrible at Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte that it made Marte cry.
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo chose not to repeat what it was the fan shouted, but it was about Marte's late mom, who died in a car crash in 2017.
That category of comment is way crossing the chirp line, for the record. Don't be that person.
Lovullo heard the chirp, which was during a pitching change at the bottom of the 7th inning, and saw Marte begin to cry. Lovullo went to comfort Marte and said:
I looked right at him when I heard. I looked right at him and he looked at the person, as well. He put his head down and I could tell it had an immediate impact on him, for sure...I just reacted as a dad would when I went out to change pitchers. I could see he was sobbing. It hurt.
The fan was thrown out of the game after that.
Here's all that Louvello said after the game:
Arizona shortstop Geraldo Perdomo says fan behavior has got to be addressed.
Remember, you'll look cooler to the crowd and to the players if you chirp something playful and funny. You aren't impressing anyone by acting like a moron.
