DID YOU KNOW: Sliced Bread Was Invented in Davenport
You've heard the saying, "Hottest thing since sliced bread". Well did you know, sliced bread was actually invented here in the Quad Cities? The original machine that slices bread was invented by Otto Frederick Rohwedder in Davenport, Iowa. Otto was a jeweler but always dreamed of making a machine that could slice bread. 87 years ago, he did just that. Grocers in the Quad Cities (tri-cities at the time) were not sure what to think of the machine at first since it was loud and bulky. However, after Otto promoted the machine in the midwest, stores started to realize that the "Keen Maid" actually worked a charm! The blades for the machine were made by a company in Davenport. That same company still makes blades for bread slicers around the world! Thanks for putting the QC on the map, Otto!
