Athletes are going to get a new facility in Muscatine.

According to WQAD, the Muscatine City Council approved plans on Thursday night for a new sports facility in the area.

There aren't any renderings drawn up yet but it is set to be at the Muscatine West Soccer Site, across from the Muscatine Soccer Complex, according to Voice of Muscatine.

It has a $7 million price tag and city council members have worked out what to use the facility for.

What It Will Include

It sounds like the facility will be used for summer sports practices and soccer. It will also be able to host pickleball, football, softball, baseball, and group gatherings in general. Here's what Muscatine City Council 4th Ward Representative Nadine Brockert said about it:

We feel our sports teams are at such a disadvantage because they only have certain places to practice during the winter. We also want to give provisions to kids who are disadvantaged to have a place where they don't have to pay to get in to play and congregate and learn some new skills.

It will be an indoor, temperature-controlled space that will have a synthetic turf field, an inflatable year-round dome structure, concessions, and bathrooms.

Another part of the drive behind building it is having somewhere closer for local kids to practice. Muscatine City Council Representative Angie Lewis said:

We've had people that live here in town that do soccer and things like that, and they're traveling great distances to either Burlington, or Iowa City, or the Quad Cities. This can keep them local so they don't have to travel so far. But it's not just a sports dome, and I think that's one thing that's going to be exciting for us. If we decide to have an indoor car show, that's a possibility, an indoor quilt show, etcetera.

When It Will Open

Merit Construction from Cedar Rapids won the contract to build it, which they will start doing this fall. Construction is expected to wrap up in the spring. In the next few weeks, after August 15th, Muscatine will host an open house to answer any questions about the facility.
