In theory, it sounds like the best revenge on kids.

It's a new legislative session, which means new bills are being introduced. Iowa legislature is considering one that would impact homeschool and education in the state general.

The bill is called House File 88. It eases homeschooling requirements a bit but there are a lot of pieces to the bill, including:

  • Exempting homeschooled kids from proving their vaccination status
  • Doubles Iowa's tuition & textbook tax credit
  • Bans teachers from teaching gender-neutral forms of world languages
  • Homeschooled elementary kids wouldn't have to be taught science & social studies (they would begin learning that in middle school)

But one of the new rules would allow parents to charge tuition for homeschool. But obviously you're not really going to be charging your kids (though it might be tempting to some days). It would impact homeschooling parents who teach other people's kids too.

Currently, it is against Iowa law for homeschool providers to charge tuition. It's also not allowed for to instruct more than 4 unrelated students.

Both of those requirements would be gone under the new bill.

That's not the only homeschool update in the bill. The bill also says that a diploma or credential from a homeschool provider must be the equivalent of a high school diploma and colleges can't discriminate based on whether a student was homeschooled.

So what's next on it? The bill was advanced in the Iowa House Subcommittee this week, so now it will go to the House Education Committee.
