It's so much fun to see so many people with Christmas and holiday lights on their homes throughout the Quad Cities and surrounding areas. If you have your lights up, you may have experienced a similar situation to mine which also made you jump off of your roof because of the intense anger you felt. We'll get to that story in a second but the point of this article is to tell you that there is a way for you to properly dispose of Christmas lights in the Quad Cities.

Christmas Lights Are Stupid

No, I don't think that people who have Christmas lights up are stupid, I'm talking about the actual lights themselves. When I went to put up the lights I bought last year that had really good ratings and reviews, before hanging them I plugged them in to make sure they all lit up and were working.

To my disbelief, both of the long rolls of white Christmas lights that I bought not even a year ago were barely working.

It seemed like every 2 feet of lights worked, then the next two feet didn't, and so on and so on. I about jumped off my roof in pure anger but then I remembered I don't like heights and these lights are going on my fence.

Can't I Throw Them in My Recycling Or Garbage Bins?

No.

Before you throw them in the street and run them over with your car several times, you should just get rid of them for free thanks to the Waste Commission of Scott County.

In a social media post on Thursday, the Waste Commission shared a graphic on social media on what does and does NOT go into your garbage and recycling carts.

As you can see in the NO! collum, holiday lights are listed.

According to the Waste Commission of Scott County, holiday lights, along with computers, monitors, televisions, printers, digital cameras, and video game systems, are considered electronic waste, or e-waste.

E-waste items can be dropped off for recycling from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8 to 11:30 a.m. the first Saturday of the month at the Electronics Recovery Center ( 5640 Carey Ave., Davenport).

If you're a resident of Scott or Rock Island counties, there is no charge for you!

Don't freak out as I did and simply get rid of your lights the right way. Happy holidays and Merry Christmas!
