Reason no. 213 I like living in Iowa. The State sends me an notice telling me it's time for me to pay the registration for my cars. I write a check, mail it and then they send me the tags and new registration in the mail. Simple and easy.

Illinois is another story. Starting this year, the State is no longer sending renewals in the mail. Drivers are supposed to remember on their own and so far a lot of people haven't gotten the message and are getting $100 tickets for expired plates.

The State says the reason they stopped sending out renewal notices is that they will save $5 million a year in postage. And now who knows how much more they'll raise in fines from people who haven't updated their car registration. In a WLS TV story, Beth Kaufman, spokesperson for the Secretary of State. "We understand the frustration of drivers." That's probably quite an understatement.
