Iowa and Illinois both have a lot of fun things to do, especially in the summertime. While that may be true, one of these states is a lot more fun than the other, and many other states according to a new list.

Our friends at WalletHub released its list of 2022's Most Fun States. In order to determine the most fun states in the country, WalletHub compared the 50 states across two key categories:

  • Entertainment & Recreation
  • Nightlife

WalletHub evaluated those categories using 26 relevant metrics. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 indicating the greatest number and variety of fun and cost-effective options. Then they determined each state’s weighted average across all metrics giving each state its overall score and allowing to WalletHub to rank each state.

WalletHub found that Illinois is the 5th most fun state in America. Illinois has the 5th most restaurants per capita. It also ranked 5th in Entertainment & Recreation and 4th in Nightlife. Illinois' overall score on this list is 55.33.

Iowa was a little further down on this list. WalletHub found that Iowa is the 33rd most fun state. Surprisingly, Iowa has the 4th most movie theaters per capita. It ranked 38th in Entertainment & Recreation and 18th in Nightlight. Iowa's overall score is 31.57.

The most fun state in America? California. The least fun state in the union? West Virginia.
