Illinois Students Asked To Help Pick Out State’s Official Colors
Did you know states can apparently have official colors?
Me neither. But evidently it's a thing and the state of Illinois wants input on picking out their first ever state colors.
It's a project for the kiddos. The Illinois State Colors Project, which Elizabeth Austin of Pekin came up with and State Rep. Travis Weaver (R, Edwards) is helping make it happen.
Students in Illinois, K-12 private, public, or homeschooled, are invited to help pick out Illinois' new state colors.
Elizabeth told News25:
I thought it was important for K-12 students to be able to use their voices and vote on this, because they don’t always get the chance to share their opinions,” said Austin. “This is a fun way to introduce voting and legislation.
The project has agreement from both Republicans and Democrats. Rep. Weaver told the outlet:
Our hope is that when we get thousands of surveys completed by students, we can go back to the General Assembly, file the legislation and then get a bill passed that reflects the will of the students.
The project looks for students' input on 3 colors:
- 1 rural color
- 1 urban color
- 1 statewide color
Students can fill out the Illinois state color survey at this link. The survey is available to students until May 1st.
This project is coming into play at the same time that Illinois seeks stories from residents to represent the state in the U.S. Library of Congress as part of recognizing America's 250th birthday this year.

Colors that are already up for voting on the state colors survey are meant to represent a certain part of rural, urban, and Illinois life as a whole.
