Illinoisans Can Get In Serious Trouble By Saying ‘112’ To Siri
Oh look, another trend that's a bad idea.
Let's not try things just because social media tells us to, okay? A trend is popping up on social media encouraging people to tell Apple's Siri 'one twelve'. There's even a rumor going around that doing so can get you a free crisis loan. It'll get you a crisis, alright.
Why Are We Even Doing This?
According to WQAD, an account called @Losangelesconfidential told it's over 13 million followers to command Siri 'one twelve'. It got over 30,000 likes before being deleted and wouldn't ya know, people have apparently tried it.
Why You Shouldn't
If you tell Siri 'one twelve', you're essentially saying '9-1-1'. 112 is the emergency number in other countries, like 911 is in America. And so therefore, your phone will automatically call 911, which is illegal to do unless you're in trouble.
People who have tried the 'one twelve' trend hang up once a 911 dispatcher answers the phone. But because they're trained to, the dispatcher will call back and ask if there's an emergency if the person answers.
Prank calling 911 can be a misdemeanor charge. All because of a stupid social media "challenge". Granted, you might think that 'one twelve' wouldn't do this if the phone is in the U.S. but Apple hasn't answered why that's the case. About 44 other countries use '112' as their emergency number.
So if you were thinking about trying this just to see what happens, there's your answer. Nothing good and a ridiculous charge on your record that you would have to explain to a potential employer.
