Prank phone calls typically come from bored junior high schoolers and are certainly not directed towards the cops.

But one cat decided to get crafty and called the cops - for no apparent reason.

According to KWQC, the Ames, IA police department received a phone call and heard nothing but silence on the other end. Part of the police protocol is to follow up on those "hang up 911" calls and sent an officer to check it out.

The police discovered that the call came from the Ames Pet Hospital and soon the paw prints were pointing to "Smudge," that accidentally pressed a pre-programmed button that   goes directly to the police station in case of emergencies.

The Ames Pet Hospital took to their Facebook page with snout shots and paw prints of Smudge.

We would like to thank the Ames Police Department for being so understanding in Smudge's accidental call to 911...
