Iowa Summer Weekend Questions: Is It Illegal To Drive Barefoot?
Be careful where you're flippy-flopping.
The concept of driving barefoot seems to get polarizing opinions. On one hand, some argue it's comfy on hot summer days and it's fine to do. Others think it's really gross, asking why you would put your bare foot on a dirty pedal.
Personally, I'm 'others' and if my passenger puts their bare feet on my dash, they're walking home.
But preferences aside, is it even legal to drive around barefoot this summer? Can we get a ticket for that?
Seriously Get A Sole Or Two
Legality aside, BankRate.com lists many reasons why you should wear shoes while driving around in Iowa.
- Bare feet can slide off the pedals more easily (especially if your feet are still wet from the pool/lake/body of water of preference)
- You can’t apply the same amount of force when you brake or accelerate if you're barefoot.
- Driving without shoes could be distracting if you step on something sharp or stub your toes
And need I remind you: our feet stink (multiply that by 5 since it's the hot summer).
But Can I Get Busted?
If you want to get technical about it, no, it's legal to drive barefoot in Iowa but it's deemed unsafe, according to Super Lawyers.
In fact, none of the 50 states have laws prohibiting driving barefoot. But even though you won't get a ticket for specifically that, several consider driving barefoot unsafe and overall, it's agreed that it's not the smartest way to drive.
