Governor Reynolds Orders Flags At Half-Staff In Iowa For A Week

Flags in Iowa will be lowered to half-staff for the coming week.

According to a press release from Governor Reynolds' office, flags in Iowa are to be flown at half-staff from sunrise on Friday, July 10th through sunset on July 17th.

It is in honor and remembrance of Iowa native, U.S. Air Force Maj. Brad Hovey.

Maj. Hovey was a pilot with the 419th Flight Test Squadron at Edwards Air Force Base in California. He was killed during a B-52 flight test mission on June 15, 2026.

Governor Reynolds said in the release:

Maj. Hovey lived and served with honor and distinction, and we are forever grateful for his service. My family’s prayers remain with Maj. Hovey’s wife and children, parents, brothers, and in-laws, as they prepare to lay their loved one to rest. As a state, we grieve his loss together, and we stand united in our support of his family.

Flags will be at half-staff at public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout Iowa as well as at the Iowa State Capitol.

If you have a flag in your yard, you're encouraged to fly it at half-staff for the week too, along with businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions.
