You probably don't want to live in a place where health care isn't good. You want good medical professionals looking you over in emergencies, regular checkups, and taking care of you and your family. A new study has come out ranking each state in order of best to worst health care. Luckily, the two states that make up the Quad Cities aren't at the bottom.

Our friends at WalletHub recently came out with their results from a recent study where they figured out the states with the best and worst health care. Before we tell you the results, let us tell you how they got to their list.

In order to determine the best and worst states for health care, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across three key dimensions:

  1. Cost
  2. Access
  3. Outcomes

They then evaluated those dimensions using 44 relevant metrics. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the best health care at the most reasonable cost.

Finally, WalletHub determined each state and the District’s weighted average across all metrics to calculate its overall score and used the resulting scores to rank each state in order from best to worst. These are their results:

WalletHub found that Iowa did pretty dang good on this list. Iowa is 2021's 8th Best State for Health Care. Some other fun statistics WalletHub found about Iowa in this study include:

  • 11th – Hospital Beds per Capita
  • 27th – Physicians per Capita
  • 24th – Dentists per Capita
  • 7th – % of Insured Adults
  • 9th – % of Insured Children
  • 17th – % of At-Risk Adults with No Routine Doctor Visit in Past Two Years
  • 13th – % of Adults with No Dental Visit in Past Year
  • 25th – % of Residents Age 12+ Initiating Vaccination

In the three key dimensions, this is how Iowa ranked:

  1. Cost - 3
  2. Access - 26
  3. Outcomes - 11

Iowa's overall score was 62.27.

Should we take a look at how Illinois favored? Illinois is 2021's 22nd Best State for Health Care. Illinois' overall score is 57.39. In the three key dimensions, this is how Illinois ranked:

  1. Cost - 28
  2. Access - 15
  3. Outcomes - 22
