Iowa Senator Proposes Bill To Buy 9 Minnesota Counties
Will we have some new Iowans?
Sen. Mike Bousselot (R, Ankeny) has proposed a bill that would let Iowa buy the bottom 9 counties of Minnesota.
Bousselot said his bill was being worked on before President Trump's comments about acquiring Greenland and Canada.
And Why Would We Do This?
Sen. Bousselot argues that it could get more agriculture investment to benefit both Iowa and Minnesota. He says that budget-wise it would make sense for both states given Iowa's budget surplus and a foreseeable budget deficit for Minnesota. The senator said:
It’s about 180,000 people that would become Iowans. They’d have a little bit more money in their pocket to buy Minnesota gear. They could still buy Gopher gear. But it would also not change the electoral math. And that political sensibility is important for a Democrat-led Senate, a Democrat governor and a split-control Minnesota House.
Is It Legal For A State To Buy Another One?
Per the U.S. Constitution, no but this would be an involved federal process. A state can't legally buy another one as the process of adding states is approved by Congress. Nor can a state buy another state's counties. It would require a change in the federal system.
If we were to expand Iowa, the state would look like this:
As of now, the bill has been only presented. Next steps are pending.
