WATCH: Iowa Waterpark Becomes ‘Mud Bath’ In Heavy Rain
Flash flooding made a messy summer for a lot of us.
A stretch of our summer in recent days has involved flash flooding for multiple Iowans. Cars were underwater, low-lying apartments were flooded, it was almost impossible to get anywhere for a while. And in the middle of waterpark season, waterparks got hit too.
KWQC reports that West Des Moines’ Holiday Park Aquatic Center became a bit messy after flash floods on Sunday. Trevor Hoth, Recreation Program & Facility Supervisor, told Grey Media Iowa that they got about 4 inches of rain in 45 minutes.
This kind of rain didn't go over very well with the dirt around the waterpark's pools, so the dirt flowed into the pools to create a 'mud bath'.
The park had to close on Monday so workers could clean up after this. They drained and refilled the pool. The good news though is that there was no additional damage to the pool area or the equipment.
It just got really muddy.
A Facebook post from the park said that they were working to get the water's chemical levels back to safety standards but it's clear water now. They opened the park Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
If you've noticed the country seems to be having flash flooding problems this summer, you're not wrong. According to KCRG, so far this year, a record-breaking number of flash flood alerts have been issued across the U.S.
Iowa State Climatologist Justin Glisan told KCRG the floods in Iowa are a result of a 4-year drought that ended last summer.
