Linn County Supervisors Say ‘No’ to New Alliant Power Plant
Alliant Energy's quest to build the new Morgan Valley Energy Center has hit a roadblock in Linn County. But it might now even matter if the state gets its way.
Linn County Supervisors Vote 'No'
CBS2 reports that the Linn County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to deny Alliant Energy's rezoning request for its proposed Morgan Valley Energy Center. All three supervisors voted no, preventing the proposed plant from moving forward. The decision also cancels the second and third readings of the proposed rezoning ordinance, according to CBS2.
Why Did The Supervisors Vote No?
According to CBS2, the supervisors based their decisions on issues of land use, public health and safety, environmental quality, infrastructure, and emergency response. The board stated that economic development must always be weighed against the community's long-term interests. CBS2 reports that the board also had concerns about water and wastewater infrastructure, and the potential financial impact on Alliant customers.
Despite the Decision, the Project Could Still Happen
Despite the rejection by the county, the power plant project could still become a reality. CBS2 reports that the Iowa Utilities Commission could approve the project, and its decision to issue approval would override the county's 'no' vote. The commission will consider Alliant's rezoning request on December 7th.
