After over 60 years, Kum & Go convenience stores will begin disappearing from the Midwest, including here in Iowa.

What will they be replaced by? The store brand that purchased the Kum & Go company in 2023. Utah-based Maverik, famous for its Adventure First Stop theme, has chosen to retire the Kum & Go brand, according to CSP Daily News. Kum & Go was launched back in 1963 by founders Bill Krause and his father-in-law Tony Gentle. While the decision is a matter of public record, CSP reports that several people with knowledge of Maverik's strategy said that after an assessment of the two chains, the Maverik brand resonated more than Kum & Go.

Last year, the two chains were neck and neck according to CSP's ranking of the top 202 convenience store rankings. Maverik was at number 21 and Kum & Go at number 22. Ankeny, Iowa-based Casey's sits at number 3 with Kwik Trip/Kwik Star at number 11. As part of the $2 billion dollar deal, CSP reports that Maverik agreed to keep Kum & Go's 5,000 employees.

CSP reports that the Kum & Go brand will be completely gone by 2025.
