If you're unfamiliar with the 23andMe data breach, I will give you a quick little rundown.

23andMe is a popular personal genomics company that provides direct-to-consumer genetic testing services. Customers can submit a saliva sample that is analyzed to generate reports on a person's ancestry and genetic predispositions to health-related conditions. Obviously, the amount of information the company collects and stores on customers is as immense as it is deeply personal. That's what made the 2023 cyberattack on the company so terrifying.

How the 23andMe Data Breach Occurred:

In October 2023, 23andMe was hit by a cyberattack that illicitly accessed data on approximately 6.9 million users. The affected customers were reported primarily to be Ashkenazi Jews and hundreds of thousands of ethnically Chinese users. Hackers effectively stole information customers had chosen to share, including their name, profile photo, birth year, location, and family surnames, to name just a few items.

Since the attack, 23andMe began requiring two-factor authentication. Now, they're paying a hefty sum of money to 42 states, including Iowa.

How Much is Iowa Getting from the Data Breach Settlement?:

Per Attorney General Brenna Bird, Iowa will receive more than $439,000 from the $18 million settlement. The money will be distributed across 42 states. The funds come directly from 23andMe's bankruptcy estate and will be distributed immediately. The company established a website to file claims, and those whose claims were approved will receive a portion of the payout. The deadline to file claims was in February 2026.

Data breaches are becoming a fact of life in a technology-dependent world. Earlier this year, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services revealed that Medicaid data for over 6,000 Iowans was accidentally posted to a state website on February 16th, 2026. The move impacted 6,717 Iowans, to be exact, and while the information leaked was minimal, it still sounded alarm bells.
