A football lifer and legend, who has spent over 60 years coaching the sport, is going back to where it all began: the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Despite announcing his retirement back in January, 87-year-old Tom Moore is continuing his career by way of a lovely circumvention. He's joining Kirk Ferentz's coaching staff as a senior consultant and offensive adviser, per Scott Dochterman of The Athletic. This move effectively makes him an overseer of football operations from a coach's point-of-view, in so many words. It's hard to quantify how much Moore has seen in over six decades on the sidelines, but I'll try and do it justice.

Tom Moore's Experience in the NFL and NCAA is a Mile-High and a Mile-Wide:

Despite being born in Minnesota all the way back in 1938, Tom Moore's football origin story started in Mount Pleasant, IA. He would go on to play quarterback at the University of Iowa from 1958 - 1960, winning the National Championship in 1958.

From there, he made the transition to coaching, assuming the role of a grad assistant at Iowa in the early sixties before spending the next several years taking on an abundance of different roles for various college programs. Moore is probably best known for being the offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts from 1998 - 2010. During that period of time, he worked almost exclusively with Peyton Manning, and helped the team win the Super Bowl in 2006.

Moore has quite the trophy case, with four Super Bowl rings total, his most recent coming in 2021 when Tom Brady led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to win it all. Prior to making his way back to Iowa, Moore spent the last seven years with the Buccaneers.

Kirk Ferentz Has the Utmost Respect for Moore:

Kirk Ferentz spoke with a great deal of respect and reverence when asked about adding Moore to the coaching staff:

I have known Tom Moore for over a decade and am thrilled that he has agreed to join our program in an advisory role. Coach Moore has had a long and very successful career in football. He was a player at Iowa, coached at the collegiate level and spent many years working alongside Hall of Fame coaches in the National Football League. I am grateful that a four-time Super Bowl champion will share his wisdom and perspectives with us — coaches and players - Kirk Ferentz, per The Athletic

When he announced his retirement earlier this year, Moore revealed that he intended to spend more time with his wife, Willie, who suffered a stroke earlier in 2026:

It’s time for me to go home and take care of my wife. For 62 years, she made a lot of sacrifices so I could live a dream and it’s always been about Tom but now it’s about Willie - Tom Moore, per People Magazine

I take it Willie is fine? Or maybe tired of him hanging around the house? Either way, the Hawkeye football brain-trust just got smarter and more experienced with Tom Moore in the fold. Read more about him joining Kirk Ferentz's staff on The Athletic, and see Tom Moore's biography on Wikipedia.
