Iowa Man Charged After Allegedly Strangling Woman with American Flag in North Liberty
A Cedar Rapids man is facing multiple charges following an alleged assault involving the use of an American flag to strangle a woman at a North Liberty home.
When Did This Happen?
The incident occurred early Monday morning when, according to a criminal complaint, 39-year-old Adam Sotzen arrived at the victim’s home upset over a previous dispute. The situation escalated when Sotzen began shouting at the woman and damaging property inside the residence.
Sotzen is accused of grabbing an American flag from a nearby house, twisting it into a rope-like shape, and wrapping it around the victim’s neck, applying pressure. The victim stated that Sotzen repeatedly told her, “you need to die,” and that she feared for her life, knowing Sotzen was capable of lethal violence.
An Attempt To Stop The Strangler
The victim’s boyfriend attempted to intervene, but Sotzen reportedly attacked him as well, hitting him in the ribs and leaving him with a swollen lip.
Sotzen fled the scene in his vehicle before authorities arrived. Law enforcement later located him, and though Sotzen initially tried to evade officers, he was eventually arrested.
What Charges Is He Facing?
Sotzen faces multiple charges, including Assault with Intent to Inflict Serious Injury, Operating While Under the Influence, and Harassment. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
