A Florida sheriff’s fundraiser meant to support charity is making headlines for an unusual reason after an inmate allegedly slipped away from his work assignment for a rendezvous inside a porta-potty.

An Inmate Snuck Off for a Conjugal Visit in a Porta-Potty

The incident happened during the 32nd annual Indian River County Sheriff’s Office BBQ fundraiser in Vero Beach, Florida. The popular event raised $63,000 for charity and featured jail tours, SWAT and K-9 demonstrations, and plenty of food for guests.

Visitors could grab $2 hot dogs or $7 dinner plates with pork or chicken while enjoying the family-friendly event.

To help run the fundraiser, the sheriff’s office used inmates known as “trustees.” These inmates are considered reliable enough to assist with work assignments outside the jail’s regular housing areas.

Surveillance Cameras Capture the Moment

One of those trustees was Hartley Sanchez, 35, of Vero Beach, who is currently jailed while awaiting trial on theft and drug possession charges.

According to a police report, Sanchez was working the BBQ serving line when he “snuck away” around 5:30 p.m. Surveillance cameras showed him walking toward a row of portable toilets where he spoke with two women.

One of the women entered a porta-potty, and Sanchez followed shortly after, “after checking if the coast was clear.”

When questioned by officers, Sanchez reportedly admitted what happened.

“Spontaneously openly and freely stated he had sex with a female in the port-a-potty.”

Investigators said Sanchez walked about 50 yards from his assigned post for what authorities called an “unauthorized conjugal visit (to hook up or have sexual intercourse).”

Woman Identified as Former Inmate

When asked who the woman was, Sanchez said, “I’m not willing to say who she was.”

However, investigators later identified her as Elizabeth Greer, 36, a former inmate who was released about two months ago after serving time for credit card theft and possession of drug paraphernalia. She is currently on probation until late 2027.

Sanchez is now charged with “prisoner escape or attempt escape,” a second-degree felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison. His arraignment is scheduled for April 8. Greer has not been charged.
