JAY-Z’s ‘The Story of O.J.’ Video Is Now Available to Watch Everywhere

Initially released as a Tidal exclusive last week, JAY-Z's animated video, "The Story of O.J." is now available to watch everywhere.

The video, featured on his latest critically-acclaimed album 4:44, is an exploration of blackness in America, specifically addressing the economic disparities between black people and whites and how that's intertwined with America's history of oppression. The song uses O.J. Simpson as a cautionary tale— O.J. once declared "I'm not black, I'm O.J." as a way of mentally distancing himself from America's permeating issues with racism, only to find that racism is inescapable, no matter what your supposed "accepted" status or wealth.

“We tend to, as black people — because we never had anything, which is understandable — we get to a place, and we just think we separate ourselves from the culture,” JAY-Z said of the video. “Like O.J. would get to a space where he’s like, ‘I’m not black, I’m O.J.’ Like Tiger Woods would get to a space and think, ‘I’m above the culture. And that same person when he’s playing golf and playing great, you’re protected. When you’re not, they’re gonna put pictures of you drunk driving and, like, embarrass you. That world will eat you up and spit you out.”
