Lawmakers In Illinois Are Trying To Make Chicago Its Own State
If someone asks if you're from Illinois, they generally assume you're from Chicago, right? For me, I specifically have to distinguish that I'm from the Chicagoland area – true Chicagoans get mad if I don't.
But if some politicians in Illinois get their way, you will actually have to distinguish between Chicago and Illinois; they're pushing to make the city its own state. This happens surprisingly often. A quick search will tell you that legislation has been filed as recently as June of 2018. They're very determined.
This week's legislation comes from three Illinois House Republicans, Rep. Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville), Rep. Chris Miller (R-Robinson) and Rep. Darren Bailey (R-Louisville). According to WREX, they're striving "to 'show the disconnect' between the northeast corner of Illinois and the rest of the state" particularly on policies on gun ownership, abortion, immigration, and other issues.
What do you think; should Chicago be our 51st state?
