Cousins Macy & Carly Gudenkauf of Manchester have dedicated the past four years to helping children battling cancer and other life-threatening ailments. Macy & Carly started the Brighten A Kid's Day 5K during the summer of 2012. So far, the event has raised $16,400 for the University of Iowa Children's Hospital.

According to an interview in Runner's World, Macy chose the cause because when she was 21 months old, her 8-month-old brother was found to have a tumor in his kidney. He was treated at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital for about six months and has made a full recovery.

Just hearing the stories from my parents about what families go through and what they had to go through with my brother really made me want to give money to them. We’ve been in to see family friends with their kids there, too, so I’ve gotten to witness it being older as well.

Last month, Macy was named an Iowa finalist in The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism. [Telegraph Herald]

The fifth installment of the Brighten A Kid's Day 5K will be held June 25th in Ryan, Iowa. The race also includes a 20-mile bike ride. Get more info HERE.
