An increase of unemployment rates, as a result of the cronavirus, was to be expected nation wide. As we continue to see those number rise as this virus holds its grip, the U.S. must remember we are all in this together not just as a community, but as humans.

We have seen 28,827 unemployment claims filed in Iowa during the week of April 19 through April 25, according to a report from the Iowa Workforce Development. That means that the total number of ongoing weekly unemployment claims in Iowa are now at 170,990.

The unemployment insurance benefits payments have totaled $51,408,623.02 for the week. Since April 4th, the FPUC has paid out a total of $327,747,600 in benefits in Iowa.

Iowa Workforce Development reports the  following industries had the most claims:

  • Manufacturing (7,402)
  • Health Care & Social Assistance (4,190)
  • Industry Not Available - Self-employed, Independent Contractors, etc. (4,182)
  • Retail Trade (2,472)
  • Accommodation & Food Services (2,130)
