According to RAGBRAI's official website, the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across began in 1973 as a 6 day ride across the state of Iowa by two Des Moines Register writers. Originally, it was a challenge between writer/copy editor John Karras, an avid bicyclist, and Don Kaul, author of The Des Moines Register’s “Over The Coffee,” also an accomplished writer. Karras suggested to Kaul that he ride his bicycle across Iowa and write columns about what he saw from that perspective.
It will be super exciting to have towns like Anamosa, Maquoketa and Clinton to have RAGBRAI go through those towns. I will definitely be in Clinton to check out the riders end this years bike ride by dipping their tires in the Mississippi River in my hometown. The last time RAGBRAI finished in Clinton was in 2012. It has also ended in Clinton in 1978, 1985, 1994, and 2004.
