8 Students, Assistant Coach Ejected In Illinois High School Football Game Fight
Tempers can get a bit high on the gridiron.
According to Springfield station WCIA, that's what happened at one high school game this week.
It was a game between Springfield High School and Springfield Southeast High School that was at Spartan Field on Monday, September 22nd. The fight happened after Southeast scored a touchdown, when the clock had 10 minutes, 26 seconds left in the 4th quarter.
No the score wasn't close when the fight went down. Once play did finally resume, Springfield High won the game 55-12. Southeast's season dropped to 1-3 while Springfield High went to 3-1.
The district says that the fight resulted in 8 players and one assistant coach getting removed from the game. Ejections automatically carry a one-game suspension but the IHSA is reviewing the footage to see if other penalties are necessary.
The game was already postponed after it got rained out in the first quarter on Saturday.
The district confirmed that 8 students were ejected but they did not specify how many of them were Springfield High students or Springfield Southeast, nor which assistant coach it was that got ejected.
As for this Friday, Springfield High will go to Quincy Notre Dame for Week 5 while Southeast will host Jacksonville.
This "altercation" isn't the only particularly violent moment in Midwest high school football lately. The Springfield incident happened just a few days after a Michigan junior varsity player belly-flopped on another player that was already down, fracturing his spine.
The Illinois high school football playoffs will start on Friday, October 31st.
