A new policy is taking effect this year.

It isn't unusual for college students to transfer schools before graduation. Maybe they get general education courses completed at a community college before moving somewhere else to begin a specialized major.

This is a time of the year when many families are looking at the logistics (and costs) of colleges and sending in applications.

The University of Illinois system has guaranteed the admission of students transferring from a community college since 2022. But now, the university has announced a new policy to expand guaranteed admission. It goes into place this fall.

Now, the new policy will guarantee admission to U of I for Illinois-native students from other schools. Here are the new requirements for guaranteed admission:

  • student must have graduated from an Illinois high school
  • student must be pursuing their first bachelor's degree
  • have at least 36 semester credit hours
  • grade point of 3.0 or higher
  • meets the English proficiency requirement of the U of I system

It's important to note that the student might be guaranteed admission to the U of I university, but it doesn't mean they're getting into a specific college or major if there are additional specific requirements.

Deadlines

Here's what to know about the University of Illinois system's transfer admissions application deadlines for fall admissions:

  • U of I Urbana-Champaign: January 15-April 5
  • U of I Chicago: April 1
  • U of I Springfield: rolling basis

You can get more details about the University of Illinois Transfer Guarantee at the college's website.
