Iowa American Water Confirms There’s Bleach In QC Drinking Water

Noticed your water smells or tastes a little strange lately? You're not imagining it.

According to KWQC, that strong flavor in your glass of water is sodium hypochlorite, aka bleach or chlorine.

Before you run out and buy every case of water they have for sale at Hy-Vee, you can relax a little bit- Iowa American Water says it's all perfectly normal and safe.

"(We do this) in accordance with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Iowa Department of Natural Resources regulations," Iowa American Water's manager of external affairs Lisa Reisen said. "We have always used a disinfectant to kill harmful bacteria/viruses in the water to protect public health."

Still, the thought of strong chemicals in the water supply is a little bit offputting. If you're concerned about the flavor or smell, there are some ultra-powered filters on the market that claim to remove chlorine and other chemicals.
