The Quad City Times reports cannabis smoking lounges could soon be a reality in Rock Island.

The city's Planning and Redevelopment Administrator, Miles Brainard, has recommended loosening the ordinance that currently bans the use of recreational marijuana inside of tobacco stores.

Brainard explained that cannabis cafes or lounges would only be allowed in industrial and business districts and they would also have to be located at least 100 feet away from residential property.

The topic was discussed heavily at the city council meeting on Monday. Some members were skeptical about the cafes, citing potential liability issues for the city.

Mayor Mike Thoms is opposed to the idea as well.

Other council members voiced their support, however.

The matter will continue to be up for debate, as City Manager Randy Tweet agreed to move forward with research and discuss the topic again next month.
