Intense Humidity Forces Davenport To Close River’s Edge Ice Rink
You're not going ice skating in Davenport for a while.
According to a release from the City of Davenport, the River's Edge ice arena (on River Drive, by the River Bandits' field) will be closing for 4-5 weeks.
There are 2 rinks in the facility and the really high humidity this summer didn't do either of them any favors. Moisture buildup began in mid-July and staff got proactive to try to prevent any air quality, environment issues or general ick but it didn't work.
Moisture problems aren't uncommon for rinks in the summer (as a figure skater myself who's in this rink every summer, I can confirm it does in fact rain in there) and the problem was particularly bad for the River's Edge after the summer's humidity. Plus they found mold in 2 of the locker rooms. But it's not a toxic mold, they say it's a "common environmental mold" but it can cause problems for people sensitive to certain allergens.
Out of an abundance of caution, that's why the locker rooms were closed.
Current Learn To Skate classes will receive full refunds and youth hockey leagues have been notified that the facility will be unavailable.
Now, facility maintenance is closing the River's Edge for several weeks as all affected surfaces are sanitized and flooring and air ducts are worked on.
As for when it's going to reopen and the timeline of it all, the city says they will post updates on the work progress and the reopening on the Parks & Recreation Facebook page.
