We're enjoying fall but wintry weather isn't too far off.

It's finally cooling off outside, definitely giving us sweater weather, and we're getting ready for Halloween. It's comfy, cool, crockpot chili season. But the cold, dark snowy stuff is headed for us.

We already know our first frost isn't that far away but Farmers' Almanac is predicting a particularly hard snowstorm for us at one specific time this winter.

Winter 2024-2025 Overall

So here's the good news: knock on wood, this winter isn't looking too crazy.

But the almanac is "redflagging" one specific set of a couple of weekends as having a "very active storm track" that could bring us a lot of snow, ice, and/or sleet and really strong winds.

They want you to watch out for January 20th-23rd & January 24th-27th.

Where exactly that storm is gonna go isn't known yet, besides the eastern half of the country, and there's no guess on how much snow it could produce. The Northwest and Texas look to be in for several inches of snow in early February so it's a good chance that around that in either late January or early February, we'll get some chunk of snow too.

That's only a little later than the big snow was this yearJanuary 6th-12th, 2024 was the snowiest week on record in the QC. We got over 25" of snow in that week (according to the Quad Cities International Airport's measurement in Moline).

While that looks to be the snowstorm of the season, for the winter in general, the almanac does predict "above-average precipitation" for the Midwest (which could include rain, not just snow). But really the forecast for winter 2025 is: wet and cold. Very exciting, not surprising stuff.
